Low Fodmap Food for Real Life
Hi and welcome to Easy Low Fodmap. My name's Matt. I'm not a chef, or a scientist. I'm a dad and a husband, with a full-time job that has nothing to do with food. But I am (and always have been) food obsessed! If I'm not eating or cooking, I'm usually thinking, talking, reading, watching or dreaming about food! I love going to restaurants, cooking - by myself or with others - and I love a good street food stand or takeaway.
I was introduced to the low fodmap diet due to digestive issues and it has been a huge help. Many people are guided towards a low fodmap diet because they're suffering with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Initially however, low fodmap options felt bland and restrictive—a real challenge for a foodie like me. Which is why it's become a hobby of mine to adapt recipes I find in books, on TV shows and on social media, to make them low fodmap. But, with a family, and a full time job, I don't have time for fuss or complicated recipes that take hours to make. So my recipes are simple, often use shortcuts or 'cheats', and designed for real life home cooks like me.
All the recipes on this site are ones that I've genuinely made for myself, my family and my friends, and all the photos are ones I've taken myself, in my home kitchen, before actually eating the food! My recipes are not certified but use low fodmap ingredients, based on the latest information available at the time of writing from reliable sources such as Monash University so should be suitable for those with IBS. However, it's important to remember that everyone with IBS is different, so the foods you can tolerate are unique to you. If in doubt, check with your healthcare professional.
My inspiration is any recipe that takes my fancy - from anywhere in the world! I have a huge collection of cookbooks, and can often be found reading these instead of a novel. For me, watching TV cookery shows is one of my favourite ways to relax, and when I'm scrolling through social media feeds, it's usually the recipes that catch my attention!
Many chefs have influenced my food, including Genaro Contaldo, Nigella Lawson, Ken Hom and Nigel Slater. My biggest food hero though is Jamie Oliver. I think his understanding of people, willingness to adapt and family values are a real inspiration. But most of all, I love his style of cooking. His chef's knowledge, training and talent never get in the way of making sure he simply creates a delicious plate of food, or sharing his recipes in an accessible way. So many of my low fodmap recipes started with me watching a Jamie Oliver TV show, or browsing one of his books. Wherever one of my recipes is an adaptation of someone else's original, I'll always acknowledge that - with a direct link to the original if available.
I'm a quarter Italian, which probably partly explains my passion for food and why sharing and enjoying food with family and friends is really important to me. Eating low fodmap meals doesn't have to mean eating something different from everyone else, and 'low in fodmaps' definitely doesn't have to mean low in flavour! (Although this is how I felt when I started cooking with low fodmap ingredients.)
When I first started learning about the low fodmap diet, I had a phase of feeling that I could no longer read my favourite recipe books, or watch the food shows on TV that I had previously enjoyed so much. But with some research, trial and error, and creative thinking, I soon discovered that I could recreate many recipes using low fodmap ingredients. Which is how this website was born. My aim is to help people who have IBS or choose a low fodmap diet for other reasons, and have busy lives, but still want to enjoy food - for themselves, or to share with others. Over time I will add recipes as I develop them and I'll also share recommendations for products and ingredients I always have in my cupboards or fridge that make the low fodmap journey simple.
I'm excited to share my low fodmap recipes and tips with you. Feel free to explore, try them out, and let me know what you think! I hope my hobby can help you enjoy food you love, with people you love.
